Robert Bess' Parabot Containment Chamber

Bess will debut his Parabot to the world during Ghost Adventures Live. According to the inventor, "Up until now, its existence has been little more than a rumor in the paranormal community." The science behind the containment chamber is based on the theory that ghosts are able to harness, and move about as, electromagnetic (EM) fields in our dimension. However, because these spirits cycle at such a low rate, humans can't see them. Bess designed his 8-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide Plexiglass Parabot -- fully equipped with electromagnets, lasers, sensors, internal and external digital thermometers, and magnetic locks -- to detect and capture these low-cycling energy fields. The chamber is built on top of a robotic 3x3-foot platform with 4 wheels. Powered by two 8-pound lithium quartz batteries, it tops out at 25-30 mph and can pirouette on a dime. The chamber is remotely controlled, but it can be voice-activated if necessary. If the EM sensors on the chamber detect an energy field, its doors open, and it moves in the direction of what it senses. Once it captures the energy in the chamber, the doors will shut and the massive 8-foot Tesla coil inside the unit produces 1.4 million watts of energy, "feeding" the EM field until it cycles at a far faster or higher rate, rendering the spirit visible. Bess claims to have already captured all sorts of entities with his Parabot, including the fully formed, clearly visible spirit of a schoolteacher from the 1920s. Other times he's captured only orbs, a face, a head or other partial manifestations.
I dont know about you but to me this seems kinda GhostBusterish and mind you im sure it will make for great TV but does this really help to make Paranormal Investigations and Ghost Hunting more legitimate? I dont think so.

Extreme Paranormal

Bashing paranormal tv shows is pretty much a sport on a lot of the paranormal forums. No matter what the shows do, you can be willing to bet that there is someone out there ready to complain about it. Personally, I take the shows with a big grain of salt. As long as they aren't teaching new investigators bad habits, like whispering during investigations or women running around with their long hair loose, I am willing to cut them some slack. However, tv's latest offering in the genre, Extreme Paranormal, is pretty much a textbook of what not to do on investigations. It's a sad day when the faked up paranormal investigation/game show Hot Chicks in Scary Places provides better role models for would-be investigators than a supposedly real show such as Extreme Paranormal does.
I'll admit that I was biased going into the first episode. The promotional material I'd seen for the show made it sound like a cross between Ghost Hunters and Jackass. The paranormal field is made to look foolish enough by some of the unprofessional behavior shown on investigation shows in general, and this was the last thing we needed. Sadly, Extreme Paranormal, lived down to, and even exceeded my lowest expectations.
There are so many problems with this show that it's hard to know where to begin. The show starts off starts off with the investigators, Shaun, Nathan and Jason, touting their own radio program. Then it slips into a highly scripted, poorly acted segue into the investigation itself. It's not a good sign when the show has a fakey feel to it from the start. On the plus side, it's obvious that the producers didn't hire real actors to star in this.
Next they went to New Mexico State Penitentiary and explained the history of the place. In 1980, there was a riot there that led to the deaths, often by torture, of 33 men. I was appalled that they would choose to focus on such a recent tragedy. The men who died in that are very likely to have family members around who are still alive today. Criminals or not, it is cruel to their loved ones to make a mockery of their deaths. It's common in these shows to display a lack of respect for the dead, but I was shocked to see such a blatant disregard for the living.
While there, they tried to stir up the spirits by recreating the feel of the riots. They accomplished this by sawing through the doors of the cells and by setting fire to the floor. There is the usual disclaimer at the beginning of the show - "kids, don't try this at home" - but you know darn well that some knuckleheads are going to try to imitate what they saw on the show regardless. So now we have a show promoting vandalism in the interest of paranormal "research."
In the second investigation, they went on to investigate the underwater site of a century old set of serial murders. They patted themselves on the back for performing the world's first underwater paranormal investigation. A ten second search on Google shows that this is hardly the case. Not only is it tacky to take credit for someone else's accomplishment, what does it say about their research skills if they weren't aware of that? You'd think they would have at least looked into what experimentation might have already been tried in that area.
The kicker was that even using their "extreme" techniques, they did not gather any more evidence than any other show. Wow, I'm impressed. What evps they did capture were so clear as to be suspect.
I will give them credit for 2 things. Even though they went overboard with it, I have found the recreation technique to be effective in evoking spirit activity in my own investigations. Secondly, they did try to get the ghost to cross over.
It's understandable that the networks would want to cash in on paranormal programming while it's hot. They also need programming that stands out from the myriad other paranormal investigation shows. However, there are many paranormal tv show pilots out, some of which I have seen and can attest are far better than Extreme Paranormal, both in terms of the quality of the investigations and in entertainment value. Ultimately, I found Extreme Paranormal to be kind of boring once I got past being irritated by it. It wasn't scary, and despite being as bad as it was, it didn't even have train wreck appeal. I won't be tuning in again.
